Measuring range

Range of values for the input signal from a measuring instrument (the measured variable) which in accordance with the characteristic curve for this measuring instrument is unique and formed within specified error limits on the basis of values for the output signal.

Measuring instruments may have several measuring ranges with different error limits. A device for changing the measuring range (e.g. measuring range converter) adjusts the set of values for the output signal in each case to match another set of values for the input signal (the measured variable). It is possible to specify different error limits (e.g. based on sections) within the same measuring range (VDI 2600).

As far measuring instruments with displays are concerned, the measuring range only covers the part of the scale which makes it possible to comply with the error limit defined by the class of accuracy specified. This range does not have to be identical to the indication range.
