As opposed to a Byte, which contains 8 bits, a word is a group of as many bits as a certain type of computer can process in parallel. As a rule, this is the data bus width. Therefore, in an 8-bit processor, a word consists of 8 bits; in a 16-bit processor, a word consists of 16 bits, etc.
