A transfer element may be referred to as linear if the law of superposition (superposition principle) applies. Linear elements may therefore be split into parallel elements whose output signals are added to the overall output signal. There is proportionality between input and output signal. Linear elements are ideal, for example, as gear transmissions or potentiometers. The typical characteristics of a linear transfer element are independent of the input signal.
